SATURDAY 26 September

15:00 – 16:00: In-Flight Entertainment: Opportunities for Nordic Filmmakers
The world of in-flight entertainment (IFE) is more than simply movies on a plane. With the evolution of video-on-demand seat-back entertainment systems there's greater demand than ever before for new and different kinds of programming. Join Shane Smith, Executive Producer at Spafax, a leading supplier of programming to airlines around the world, as he provides an overview of the players and the opportunities in the world of IFE. Find out how to get your program onto an aircraft, what companies provide this service and what you need to know to take advantage of this burgeoning exhibition platform.

New forms of technology coupled with the constant change in user habits have created endless opportunities for filmmakers to showcase their work while generating some additional income. Showcasing the new Shortz! mobile VOD platform.

The decisions film festival programmers make can sometimes seem brilliant, sometimes baffling. In this discussion several festival programmers discuss their festivals' decision-making process, their personal tastes, and the role of film festivals in the distribution, exhibition and appreciation of independent short and documentary film.

As we know, there are many types of creativity involved in making a documentary, and production financing is among them. In this session a Danish production team discusses the innovative ways in which their project is financed.

16:00 – 17:00: Distribution is Not for Dummies
Technology was supposed to make it easier, so called "do-it-yourself" distribution, but with so many available options it seems that distribution is getting more and more complicated. In this discussion international distributors will discuss a variety of strategies, from traditional to emerging markets, for maximizing a production's distribution potential.

This presentation will give you the inside scoop on how to survive, and succeed, in the changing world of short film distribution. Based on her book “Swimming Upstream - A Lifesaving Guide to Short Film Distribution,” Tribeca Short Film Programmer Sharon Badal will help you navigate the waters of film festivals and distribution. Topics include: understanding the festival circuit, tips to improve your odds, and what you need to know before you sign with a distributor.

16:00 – 17:00: Hunting for Oscar

Being nominated for an Academy Award seems like one of those crazy dreams that could never happen to you. But a trip to the Oscars could be closer than you think. Several Nordic shorts have been nominated (and even won!) recently, and this is your opportunity to learn how it happened. What's the nomination process? What Festivals should I play at, and what kind of screenings can derail my chances? Meet distributors that have shepherded Oscar-nominated films through this process, and talk to filmmakers that have actually walked the red carpet on Oscar night.

17:00 – 18:00: Selling Your Short - What Distributors Need and What Buyers Want

Making a short to get it seen is one thing. Making a short that you sell is a completely different challenge. What do you need to do to make your short stand out in a crowded marketplace and attract distributors and buyers? Jennifer Chen, Director of Programming at Channel Zero will take you through all the messy details that can make or break the sales potential for your film. As a current buyer of shorts (for Movieola- The Short Film Channel) and a former distributor of shorts (for Ouat Media Distribution), Jennifer is in the unique position of having worked as both a buyer and seller of short films. She’ll offer tips and tools to enable filmmakers to make smart, informed decisions that will maximize the potential for their films.
