LAST CALL FOR OPEN SOURCE PROJECTS
OPEN SOURCE: WHAT IS IN IT FOR YOU?
5 Nordic projects with Open Source potential are offered an intensive workshop focusing on the creative opportunities and distribution benefits that Open Source has to offer.
The Clinic will be led by Canadian documentary filmmaker, Daniel Cross, Professor at Concordia University, Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema, and Brett Gaylor, filmmaker and head of New Media at EyeSteelFilm in Montreal, with many years of experience with alternative distribution and production.
THE OPEN SOURCE DEVELOPMENT GRANT (NOK 50.000) WILL BE AWARDED TO THE MOST DESERVING PROJECT.
Clinic Program:
1. General Intro:
An in-depth case study of EyeSteelFilm's award winning feature documentary "Rip! A Remix Manifesto", a film that was built through contributions from thousands of users around the world.
The website opensourcecinema.org was created to produce Rip, and is now being re-launched to encourage global filmmakers to produce in a participatory, collaborative manner. The Open Source Clinic is a unique opportunity to not only workshop a suite of projects in development, but also participate in the future of this newly re-launched website.
2. Project Development
Each of the 5 filmmakers will explore how their projects can benefit from an Open Source process. The workshop will strive to have each film project address the following questions:
• In what ways can your documentary benefit from multiple points of view?
• Can your story be told in more than one way? Can it exist as a traditional documentary, as well as a non-linear story?
• Can your film be substantially different online, in theatres, and on television? How can you harness the strengths of each medium?
• Does offering your footage for re-use benefit you or your subjects' community?
• Does your subject matter and approach lend itself to the opportunities of online distribution, peer-to-peer networks, and social media?
And above all:
• How can your audience participate in your film?
Practical information:
The Clinic takes place Saturday - Sunday, 26 - 27 September 2009, in Reykjavik, Iceland during Nordisk Panorama. Participation is free of charge and one person per selected project will receive free accreditation to Nordisk Panorama – 5 Cities Film Festival.
Each selected project can be represented by max. 3 persons.
Open Source Development Grant (NOK 50.000): One project will ultimately be selected to be further developed on the Open Source Platform under the mentorship of Dan Cross and Brett Gaylor. The Grant is given as a development support according to Nordisk Film & TV Fond's guidelines.
Application to participate must include:
• 1-page synopsis of the project
• Motivation to work through Open Source, answering the workshop questions above
• CVs of members of the creative team (minimum director and/or producer)
