The EDN Financing Guide Expands
EDN (European Documentary Network) has released the 2010 edition of The
EDN Financing Guide, and this time EDN has expanded the must-have guide
with a global perspective. The Guide, that formerly only included
information on the European broadcasters, now provides detailed contact
information and profiles of both European and international
broadcasters, distributors, VoD platforms and funds. The guide is
available both in a printed and an online version. Find more
information here.
Danish Support for Animation Film
The Danish government and the parties behind the recent film deal have
decided to give special attention to Danish animation films. This means
that in 2010, the Danish Film Institute establishes a 10 mill DKK
animation pool with a special focus on development and production of
short format animation films. The Animation pool will support high
quality films with children as the target audience, films using
innovative and inexpensive production methods, and films aimed at a
broader audience, which thereby can attract financing from the
broadcasters.
Festivals Launch Films Online
More and more festivals now release the films screened during their
festival online after the actual event, thereby making the films
available for an audience all year round.
Doc Alliance, the partnership between five major European documentary film festivals, opened its common VoD portal already last year, offering permanent access to documentaries selected by the five partner festivals. Recently, two more festivals have announced, that they are creating platforms for online streaming.
Göteborg International Film Festival in Sweden
is cooperating with VoD platform Voddler on publishing films without
theatrical distribution in Sweden on their platform after the event.
This will give audiences online access to more than 85% of the films
screened at the festival.
Likewise, Canadian international documentary film festival Hot Docs plans to launch an online library, providing free, public access to some 200 documentaries. The library will not screen docs currently in circulation but will be made up of older titles that are not available through conventional distribution channels, thereby giving the films a new life. The initial offering will be a 50/50 split of Hot Docs' shorts and features. The new website will be separate from its password-only sales tool Doc Shop.

New Short Film Journal
A new English language short film journal is in the pipeline. The
journal Short Film Studies is designed to stimulate ongoing research on
individual short films as a basis for a better understanding of the art
form as a whole. In each issue, two or three short films will be
selected for comprehensive study, with articles illuminating each film
from a variety of perspectives.
Editor Richard Raskin invites all students of
the short film - including researchers, teachers and filmmakers - to
contribute to the first issue. Click here to read more.
